ActiveX, COM and related Books

Editor's Pick - Dan Appleman's Developing Com/Activex Components With Visual Basic 6
Dan Appleman

This book is an "upgrade" from Dan Appleman's earlier book on Visual Basic 5. The author has not only changed the title, but has put a lot of efforts in including the latest features in Visual Basic 6 including WebClasses.

If you are a VB developer venturing into COM, this book is one of the best books available. This is not one of those "Learn in 15 days" or "Quick learn" books which claim to teach you ActiveX without any prior knowledge of anything. This is a serious discussion on ActiveX technology and things behind it.

The book takes you on a detailed look at COM, devoting quite a few chapters on it. Unlike other books which take you on a ride with VBScript and controls directly, this book teaches you everything about ActiveX EXEs, DLLs, properties, performance issues, etc.

I could write at lengths about this book, but in one statement - If you are a serious Visual Basic developer or would like to get into the wonderful world of COM, buy this book.

Essential COM (The Addison-Wesley Object Technology Series)
Don Box

0201634465.gif (14676 bytes)Excellent book for developers who are conversant with COM. Definitely not for beginners. The author is an authority on COM and that's what makes this book a good reference and a tutorial.

Understanding ActiveX and Ole (Strategic Technology Series)
David Chappell

This book provides a high-level overview of ActiveX, OLE and COM technologies. The style is light and makes a perfect reading for technical and non-technical persons alike. The book also makes a good exam guide just in case you are taking up the "Windows Architecture" exams for MCSD.

Also benefited are project managers who have to make a decision if COM is right for their project/company.

Mr. Bunny's Guide to ActiveX
Carlton Egremont

If you need light reading on ActiveX, especially when you are a beginner, read this one. The book traces the journey of a farmer and a bunny through the land of COM.
